Second thoughts on Beltane

The Goddess in Her Maiden Aspect

Beltane is the time when the goddess chooses her mate and weds him, thus granting him sovereignty.  It is always the Goddess/Queen who gives sovereignty to the God-King.  There are many stories of a Goddess/Queen being fought over to gain her sovereignty by two Gods/Kings representing the dark/ winter and light/summer.  A reason why this festival may be seen as both for the God and the Goddess.

Marriage of The God and Goddess

The Goddess is in her alluring Maiden aspect; the May Queen/Bride, Goddess of Spring, Flower Bride, Queen of the Fairies, all symbols of purity, growth and renewal.  (The Crone turns to stone or goes into the earth on Beltane Eve.). Hawthorn blossom, also known as May, symbolises female fertility, with its creamy/ white, fragrant flowers.  It is unlucky to bring the blossom into the house, apart from on May eve.

Hawthorn May Blossom

Who do you need to join forces with?  Would you offer sovereignty to anyone, if so who?  What are you hoping to create at this time?  Who will you join forces with to create something special?  Who do you need to make better relationships with?

First thoughts on Beltane

30th April – 2nd May

The word Beltane is from ‘Bel’ meaning ‘the bright one’ and ’teine meaning ‘fire’; together meaning ‘the fire of the Bright One (the Sun)’.  It is the last of the three Spring festivals, after Imbolc and Ostara, and is seen as the beginning of the light half of the year, although this occurred at Ostara.  It is a cross-quarter day and a Spirit Night alongside Litha and Samhain.

Sun God

Traditionally the four Goddess festivals/seasons are about the Earth; Samhain, Imbolc, Beltane and Lammas and fall between those of the God which are about the Sun; Midwinter Solstice, Spring Equinox, Midsummer Solstice and Autumn Equinox.  Perhaps Beltane may be seen as both a God (Fire) and Goddess (Earth) festival as the Earth is so pronounced at this time, with the new life given to her by the Sun.  We shall see another potential reason for this in the second thoughts on Beltane tomorrow.  Certainly, at this time, the god is growing and becoming more potent and vital as he goes towards his zenith at Litha (Midsummer Solstice).

Bel (Beli, Belenos) is the Celtic Sun God, the deity of light, health and healing.  In some parts of Europe, Belenos was thought to drive a chariot carrying the Sun’s disc.  In his healing aspect, he is associated with healing waters, wells and springs. He is often associated with the greenwood and the green man. The wheel, sunburst, head with penumbra or halo are the symbols and associations of Bel.

Bel

Bel Fires were lit when the Tuatha de Danann arrived in Ireland on 1st May and burnt ships at dawn in honour of Bel.  Household fires were extinguished and relit from the Bel-Fire (Bale Fire). The ritual welcoming of the sun and the lighting of the fires was also believed to ensure fertility of the land and the people. Farm animals were passed between the Bel Fires to cleanse, protect and make them fertile as they went to summer grazing.  People leapt over Beltane fires for fertility and purification.

Where will you look to see the new growth sprouting?  What needs to be extinguished before being re-lit from a renewed source?  What light can you bring into your own, or someone else’s life?  Who or what needs your nurturing now?

A spring Pick-Me up

Feeling in need of a pick me up? Traditional spring tonics were country remedies that were used to cleanse the blood and replenish vital nutrients following a harsh winter diet and also ideal for the situation we are now in.
Often consisting of whichever new green growth came through first, but these are perhaps the most popular and may be growing in your garden. N.B. It is vital to identify plants correctly, if you are ever unsure do not eat or use the plant medicinally. Ensure that the plants are free from pesticides and not where a dog may walk. Do not imbibe if allergic to any of the constituents.
NETTLE (Urtica dioica) is well known for containing iron, but it also contains beta carotene, silica, selenium, magnesium, zinc and vitamins A, C, D, E, F, K, P and B6 as well as being a very high source of protein.
CLEAVERS (Galium aparine) contains vitamins B3 and C, silica and calcium.
DANDELION (Taraxacum officinale) well known for containing potassium, but it also contains calcium, iron, and vitamins A and C.
Use as a herbal tea, pouring hot water over either fresh or dried leaves.

April’s Full pink moon

April’s Full Moon falls on 8th April at 03:35 in Libra. It is the second in a series of three Super Full Moons (March, April and May) and the first in Spring. A Super Full Moon takes place when the Moon is near its closest approach to Earth (perigee). Because it’s so close to Earth, a Super Full Moon looks about 16% brighter than an average Full Moon and is about 30% brighter than a Micro Full Moon.
Names for this Full Moon include Pink Moon (from the pink phlox flowers and cherry blossom at this time), but note the Moon is not seen as pink, Other names for this Full Moon include Hare Moon, Egg Moon (both relating to spring and Easter) and Paschal Moon (because it is used to calculate the date for Easter; the first Sunday after this Moon is Easter Sunday).
During these strange and challenging times, it may be difficult to think beyond the immediate, however there will be better times. Seasonally, this is a time of growth and becoming, of resurrection and hope. Perhaps you have noticed strengths that you had forgotten or did not recognise you had. What do you want to see growing now in your life? What new things can you enjoy? What do you hope for? Make a wish as you gaze at this month’s Full Moon and bring hope and becoming into your life.

Tarot Reading

A Tarot deck usually consists of 78 cards divided into two main sections, the Major and Minor arcana (arcana means ‘profound secret’), therefore Tarot cards are a collection of the ‘secrets’ that underlie and explain our universe and our place in it. A Major has a significant potential, whilst a Minor card is more about day to day living. The latter are in four suits and are divided into Pip cards and Court cards, each with its own associations and meanings, which in turn are influenced by the imagery on an individual card.
A Tarot Card Reading can help guide you through your troubled emotions and clouded thoughts, by offering a reflection of your past, present and possible future and showing you a fresh perspective on your life. A reading helps you explore areas of your life so you can make the best decisions possible e.g. Career, Family, Health, Love, Finances, Home and more.
Do Tarot readers foretell the future? In my view, the cards highlight a set of feelings, thoughts and behaviours concerning an area of your life at this time and if these continue, the likely outcome. If you like the outcome, continue as you are, if you do not like the outcome make changes to achieve what you want. The cards can help you identify what to change. Your future is in your hands, not in the cards per se.
Tarot Card Reading are £20 for 30 minutes or £30 and 60 minutes. These may be made either at Mintlaw Holistic Centre or via Skype

Sound Therapy

SOUND THERAPY has been proven to reduce stress and anxiety, improve learning abilities, increase focus and concentration, improve short-term memory loss and promote an overall sense of well-being. As well as improving emotional and social development, cognitive and motor functioning, and psychological and psychiatric health.
Almost everything we experience in the universe is simply our perception of waves. When sound waves reach our ears, they are converted into electrical signals that travel up the auditory nerve into the auditory cortex, the part of the brain that processes sound. Once sound waves reach our brains, they trigger responses in our bodies. This process alters our emotions, releases hormones, and triggers certain impulses. Since sounds come at different frequencies and we too emit our own waves, healing with sound happens by matching frequencies to those that are conducive to healing and relaxation.
There are a number of methods, instruments, and techniques for using sound therapy. MHC uses the vibrations of singing bowls, rattles, drums, tingshas and sticks to restore the normal vibratory frequency of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual layers of the body.
30- or 60-minute Sound Therapy sessions are available at MHC.

Reiki

REIKI is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is usually administered via the hands, sometimes touching but often above the body. It is based on the theory that an unseen life force energy flows through us and is what causes us to be alive and it effects our health on all levels. If this energy is low, then we are likely to become ill or stressed but if it is balanced then we feel happier and healthy.
Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. It is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping many illnesses and creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery. There are many forms of Reiki available and these are the ones I offer.

USUI REIKI follows closely the teachings of Mikao Usui who brought Reiki to the modern world alongside that of Chujiro Hayashi and Hawayo Takata.60 minutes: £30

CRYSTAL REIKI combines Reiki with the energy from various crystals placed on and around the body.  It promotes relaxation, releasing pain and blocks on all levels, enhancing confidence and self-esteem, encouraging mental clarity and brings a sense of peace and centredness. 60 minutes: £30
